چکیده

We compared weight gain, feed disappearance, coughing prevalence, and lung lesion scores among pigs vaccinated against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (treatments I and 2) and nonvaccinated controls. Pigs in both vaccinated treatment groups gained significantly more weight (0.14 Ib per day, P < .05) during the finishing phase when grow-finish data were pooled and compared to the control group. Pigs in both vaccinated treatments consumed significantly more feed (0.49 and 0.41 Ib,respectively) versus the control (P < .05) during the finishing phase. We recorded significantly fewer coughs by treatment 2 (vaccinated at 6 and 8 weeks of age) pigs than by treatment I (vaccinated at 2 and 3 weeks of age) and control pigs (P < .05). Coughing frequency was highest when pigs were 4-5 Yzmonths of age. Severity of lung lesions detected at slaughter in both groups I and 2 were reduced significantly (6% and 4% respectively) compared to the control group (12%, P < .05). All other feed and growth parameters during the growing, finishing, and combined phases between both treatment groups and the controls were not significant (P > .05). The prevalence of lung lesions was similar for all three groups. These results indicate that an M. hyopneumoniae vaccine can significantly reduce the severity of lung lesions of enzootic pneumonia detected at slaughter, significantly increase feed disappearance during the finishing phase, and significantly increases average daily gain during the finishing phase. It did not improve feed efficiency in this trial, however.

Etiology and Serological Diagnosis of Swine Enzootic Pneumonia

Swine enzootic pneumonia (SEP) is probably the most prevalent and important disease of pigs in the world today. Economic loss due to growth retardation and low feed efficiency in the infected pigs is a serious problem for pig producers. The occurrence of this disease has been known since the 1930's in European countries. At present this disease probably occurs everywhere swine are raised as dom...

Herd specific risk factors for Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae infections in suckling pigs at the age of weaning

BACKGROUND Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is the etiologic agent of enzootic pneumonia mainly occurring in fattening pigs. It is assumed that horizontal transmission of the pathogen during nursery and growing phase starts with few suckling pigs vertically infected by the sow. The aim of the present study was the exploration of the herd prevalence of M. hyopneumoniae infections in suckling pigs follow...

Lymphocyte Populations and Antibody Production in Vaccinated and Non-vaccinated Pigs Challenged with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae

and Implications Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyo), the cause of enzootic pneumonia in swine, is a worldwide problem. Despite the developmental vaccines that have been commercially available for several years, M. hyo-induced pneumonia is still a major concern to swine producers. The pathologic lesions observed with enzootic pneumonia consist primarily of a lymphoid cell infiltration of the lung...

Microbiome overview in swine lungs

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is the etiologic agent of swine enzootic pneumonia. However other mycoplasma species and secondary bacteria are found as inhabitants of the swine respiratory tract, which can be also related to disease. In the present study we have performed a total DNA metagenomic analysis from the lungs of pigs kept in a field condition, with suggestive signals of enzootic pneumonia a...

Mycoplasma Hyopneumoniae - Epidemiology and Control

Respiratory disease is an economically devastating syndrome affecting swine production worldwide. Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyo) is a key pathogen involved with enzootic pneumonia (EP) and the Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex (PRDC). Enzootic pneumonia is composed of M. hyo and secondary bacteria such as Pasteurella multocida, Streptococcus suis, Haemophilus parasuis, and Actinobacillus p...
